Promoting construction careers to students across West Yorkshire with the Boosting Skills Pathways Project

The Boosting Skills Pathways Project was developed in response to skills shortages across the construction sector. It aims to raise awareness of lesser-known construction careers and the apprenticeship opportunities available at all levels within the industry. More than 750 learners from five West Yorkshire schools took part in employer-led assemblies, interactive workshops, and site visits as part of the project.

A new set of resources was also created during the project to enable schools and employers to continue to deliver similar sessions in the future.

Bringing construction careers to life

Students had the opportunity to hear directly from employers about the projects they are working on, skills that are needed, and pathways into the industry.

At Trinity Academy Halifax, students worked with Laing O’Rourke, learning about careers linked to major projects including the Calderdale Royal Hospital development. Following an employer-led assembly, students took part in more focused activities; exploring apprenticeships, career pathways and skills.

Students from The Ruth Gorse Academy visited AECOM and worked alongside professionals from both AECOM and RPP, gaining insights into careers in engineering, construction and project management, while taking part in a practical engineering challenge.

Equans and Unity Housing delivered a half-day session to students from Dixons Trinity Chapeltown. Alongside learning about careers in construction, students’ teamwork and problem-solving skills were put to the test during a practical challenge!

Liz Armitage, from C+K, also took part in the session, gathering feedback from students about the resources C+K has developed as part of the project. These resources include career pathway maps, role profiles, apprenticeship guidance and employer outreach materials, and will continue to support schools, employers and career professionals in learning about construction careers.
