Georgia had just enrolled at college and landed her first ever job when she received the life changing news that she was going to become a young parent.
At 16, Georgia thought this meant her dream of becoming a midwife was over; and with her partner serving our country in Afghanistan, she set herself up for a life on benefits. When her daughter was born, with no college course and no job, Georgia rarely left the house unless she had to, lost contact with her friends and found herself feeling isolated.
That was until C&K Careers’ adviser, Melissa, reached out to Georgia on Facebook to tell her about Parents with Prospects. Parents with Prospects is a course run by Barnardos for 16 to 18 year old young parents not in employment, education or training. It aims to get them back into thinking about their future them and helps them develop their skills for everyday life.
The course provided Georgia with a stepping stone to help her think about what to do next. She took part in fun activities to encourage confidence building, improve her self-esteem; and develop her personal and parenting skills – all of which resulted in Georgia achieving her Level 1 Caring for Children Certificate for Young Parents.
Completing the Parents with Prospects course has now given Georgia the opportunity to progress with her future.
"I am now on a course which is ‘working with adults with disabilities and dementia’ and I also have an interview for an access course in the health profession, looking at university next year. Not only that, Parents with Prospects has given me the chance to provide my daughter with the opportunity of nursery, so she has also built confidence and developed so much. I only have Melissa and the Parents with Prospects course to thank as without them I wouldn't be where I am today and I've made some great friendships along the way. I would recommend this course to any young mum that has lost hope and doesn't know which road to take as it brings so much opportunity". Georgia.
"I’m thankful to have been given the opportunity to have worked with teenage parents over the past year and seen the transition and change. The course has been fantastic for Halifax, we haven't had a course for teenage parents for such a long time and it's worked so well – proven by the number of success stories we’ve seen, with Georgia being a shining example of this. I’ve worked with some lovely people who really wanted to progress into work and look forward to their futures, and I'm proud of every single one of them". Melissa, careers adviser.
