Nexus - extended work experience placements

Girl on extended work experienceC&K Careers Nexus (Calderdale) in partnership with Kirklees Nexus and Project Challenge Calderdale, is offering a range of extended work placement opportunities.

The Nexus service caters for year 11 students who are in school but would particularly benefit from a more practical element alongside their current curriculum.

The project offers personalised, work-related learning for up to two days a week with a local employer, together with the opportunity to take part in an accredited course. The remaining time is spent in school taking a reduced number of GCSEs.

Dedicated project officers identify suitable work placements and make arrangements for student interviews, health and safety assessments and student inductions. The Nexus project provides regular placement monitoring and student mentoring throughout the year, as well as providing a high level of support to families, schools and the local businesses supporting the project.

Extended work placements can be beneficial for students:

  • who excel in a practical environment
  • who are most likely to benefit from taking a reduced number of GCSEs
  • where attendance is starting to become an issue
  • who have experienced little success in school
  • in danger of becoming disaffected
  • at risk of exclusion.

Nexus In-School currently offers students the opportunity to take part in a BTEC Award in Work Skills (Entry Level 3/Level 1). The structure facilitates a flexible approach that allows candidates to work towards individual units as stepping stones towards the full qualification.

Units cover:

  • Preparing for Work Placement
  • Safe Learning in the Workplace
  • Learning from Work Placement
  • Self-Assessment
  • Producing a CV and Interview Skills.

The project has already been highly successful in Kirklees – below is what schools, parents and students had to say.
