Through free in-school events, great work experience placements, enterprise competitions and resource development, we work with you and your students to help them understand the world of work.  

C&K are proud to be part of this exciting new project, delivering IAG sessions, running FutureJobs events and facilitating Work Experience for young people in the areas of Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. We are also working with industry and educational professionals to develop resources around the Advanced Manufacturing sector.

Futurejobs Events

Bring employers, role models and careers professionals direct to your students. Offering pre-event support and half-day sessions for young people in your school or college, our carousel of activities will help them:

  • understand jobs now and in the future
  • develop encounters to establish employer expectations
  • develop entrepreneurial spirit through self-employment
  • find pathways to further and higher education 

Work Experience

Building on input from our FutureJobs events, we offer meaningful work experience placements with local, national and international employers. 

  • All employers are fully vetted
  • Placements are planned with the young person to help them understand and work towards their individual goals.
  • The experience adds value to the rest of the careers programme and is embedded into an achievable action plan.  

Enterprise Competitions

Employer-designed enterprise competitions, building students' problem solving and entrepreneurship skills.

  • Encourages innovation and enterprise
  • Real life scenarios designed in conjunction with major employers such as Premier Farnell, Keepmoat Construction and Nestle.
  • Provides a stimulating method for developing key employability skills. 

Apprenticeship Ambassador Scheme

Supporting current and recently-completing apprentices to develop their skills

  • Accredited communication training to help develop presentation skills
  • Involvement in training to help grow mentoring talents 

Resource Development 

Join our resource development team as an education professional to develop new classroom practice and top-class tools in the areas of Digital, Advanced Manufacturing and Construction.

IAG for young people with special educational needs and disabilities

young people in a classroomC&K Careers has a dedicated SEND team (Special Educational Needs and Disability team) operating in secondary special schools and resourced provision, helping young people with their transition to further education, training, work and other destinations.
The team also supports our other careers advisers, who deal with young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in mainstream education.

We get to know each young person through individual interviews, group work and contacts with parents/carers. We are present at their transition review usually held in year 9 and at the year 11 review to help identify suitable progression routes. Where there is no suitable local provision, we will help with applications to specialist residential colleges. 

'Ours is a special school for some of the most vulnerable pupils in Kirklees. Your help and support has helped ensure:

  • there is continuity of help once pupils leave school so that progress can be maintained.
  • all our leavers have been offered places at further education college on courses including brickwork, joinery apprenticeships, ICT, public services and hairdressing.
  • our pupils and staff have received high quality careers, further education and training advice.'

For young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan or a Statement of Special Education Needs, leaving school for further education or training, we can write a 'needs assessment' – a detailed report of the support needed to ensure success in post-16 education, training or higher education. Our support can continue up to the young person's 25th birthday to ensure they maintain their place in education, employment or training.

Nexus - extended work experience placements

C&K Careers works in partnership Nexus In-School, part of Kirklees Council to offer a range of extended work placement opportunities.

Nexus In-School caters for Year 11 students who are in school but would benefit from a more practical element to complement their current curriculum.

The project offers personalised, work-related learning for up to three days a week with a local employer, together with the opportunity to take part in structured learning sessions to complement their work placement. The remaining time is spent in school taking a reduced number of GCSEs.

Dedicated project officers identify suitable work placement, make arrangements for student interviews, health and safety assessments and carry out work to prepare the students for placement.  All students attend a two-day induction prior to starting their placement. Nexus project officers provide regular placement monitoring and student mentoring throughout the year, as well as providing a high level of support to families, schools and the local businesses supporting the project.

Extended work placements can be particularly beneficial for students:

  • who excel in a practical environment
  • who are motivated to work
  • who are most likely to benefit from taking a reduced number of GCSEs
  • where attendance is starting to become an issue
  • who have experienced little success in school
  • in danger of becoming disaffected

Group Work

Nexus In-School offers students the opportunity to take part in non-accredited, structured learning sessions which are relevant to the students whilst at placement and for when they move on from Year 11.

  • Sexual Health
  • Substance Misuse

Our Success 2015/16

  • 92% retention rate
  • 100% achievement rate of those retained
  • On completion, 96% of students had been offered Post-16 courses that meet the Raising of Participation duty. Of these, 38% had offers of an apprenticeship as a direct result of being on the project.

Quality in Careers Standard awarded by C&K Careers

Halifax Academy achieve the Quality in Careers Standard

C&K Careers is a licensed awarding body for the Quality in Careers Standard.  The Standard showcases and supports the development of outstanding careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG).  The nationally recognised award is one of the highest accolades an organisation can receive for excellence in this area of work.

We have been awarding a Quality Standard for CEIAG for 20 years. Over 60% of all mainstream schools in Calderdale and Kirklees hold the standard and have done so continuously for a number of years. We also work with an increasing number of institutions from other areas of the country. 100% of institutions assessed return to us for their reassessments every 3 years.

What is the Quality in Careers Standard?

The Quality in Careers Standard is the dedicated national quality award for Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance.  There are already over 1100 Schools, Colleges and Work Based Learning providers in England who either hold or are working toward the Quality in Careers Standard.  This includes over 30% of England's state secondary schools and academies as well as 30% of England's Sixth Form Colleges.  

Why undertake the Quality in Careers Standard?

Holding the Standard demonstrates your institution meets the requirements of legislation and Government guidelines relating to CEIAG (DfE statutory guidance January 2018 and Ofsted 2015).  The Statutory Guidance strongly recommends that schools should work towards the Quality in Careers Standard to review and evaluate provision. The revised Statutory Guidance states "schools can gain formal accreditation of their careers programme through the Quality in Careers Standard - the national quality award for careers education, information, advice and guidance. The Standard offers an opportunity for schools to undergo an external evaluation of their careers programme and so is distinct from the Compass self-assessment. Work is continuing to align the Standard more fully to the Benchmarks and to incorporate Compass into its processes, so those schools achieving the Standard meet all eight Benchmarks. Holding the Standard also provides peace of mind for parents knowing that their child's school is investing in their careers guidance.

It provides an excellent framework for both the delivery and the evaluation of CEIAG, the evaluation process can help to provide independent, objective evidence for inspections such as Ofsted.  Additional benefits of good CEIAG provision includes improved attendance, achievement and outcomes for learners.  Holding the Quality in Careers Standard also demonstrates that you meet the 8 recommended Gatsby Benchmarks for good CEIAG.  

Our dedicated team of experienced assessors will guide you through the assessment process, providing support along the way.  We will audit your CEIAG provision, and support you to develop and enhance your CEIAG offering and ensure it meets statutory guidelines.  Work is easily submitted via a secure online system.

Who do we work with? 

We've assessed a wide range of organisations including secondary schools both with and without sixth forms, academies, multi-academy trusts (who may be eligible for a discount), special schools, sixth form colleges and FE colleges. We've recently introduced a new primary school standard.

We are currently delivering the Quality in Careers Standard awarded by the Humber LEP to up to 50 institutions in the Humber region.  This is funded by the European Social Fund via the InspireMe programme.  Schools and Colleges in the Humber region are able to work towards and be assessed against the Quality in Careers Standard free of charge as part of this ESF funded programme.
